I met Molly Schenck while she was a dancer at the University of Maine. While in the Pine Tree State she created and produced It’s Not That Simple, a dance theatre performance exploring the sexual assault and relationship-based violence and challenging some of the most pervasive assumptions.
I first saw (and photographed) the performance at UMaine in 2011. When I heard that she was producing an updated version of It’s Not That Simple at her new home at Arizona State University, I thought it would be the perfect time to visit. She asked me to take some photos of the performance while I was there, and I happily obliged.
The performance took place in an occupied Tempe bar. A series of short spoken word vignettes combined with dance and music formed a truly powerful and memorable performance from an incredible cast of eleven, ranging in age from late teens to mid-30s.
I’m so glad I made the trip to see the Arizona production of It’s Not That Simple!
